This recipe is a family favorite. Our mom has been making these sausage balls for years. This was her mom’s recipe (Grandmas Nix). She usually made these around the holidays and we always looked forward to eating them. It always seemed like a special treat when she made them since she didn’t make them a whole lot throughout the year. It’s kind of funny because our mom isn’t a big fan of sausage but she loves these.
Grandma would always make these as an appetizer while she played poker with her family. Our mom always laughed that Grandma knew nothing about poker but she would always end up winning. Go Grandma!
And with just a few simple ingredients, they are a cinch to make. All you need is sausage (Jimmy Dean is my favorite!), cheddar cheese, an egg and Bisquick. You just combine all ingredients, form into balls, bake them and that’s it! How easy is that?
Now the original recipe actually didn’t call for the egg but the last couple times I have made these they were a little crumbly and falling apart as I was forming them. So this time I added an egg to help them stick together better. I also grated the cheese myself instead of buying the pre-shredded kind. Doing both these things definitely helped with the forming process. These little guys turned out perfect!
This sausage ball recipe makes for a great appetizer or snack for any kind of party whether it’s game day or poker night. We made them on New Years Eve one year for our little party and they were gone within minutes. Shawn and his younger brother James were over and they devoured them. Shawn is kind of a picky eater so I knew they were a hit.
Pair them with barbecue sauce (Sweet Baby Ray’s is the best!) or any sauce you like (Shawn even dipped a couple of his in syrup and he loved it!), and these sausage balls become the perfect party food.
What you’ll need:
1 lb of sausage
1 1/2 cups of cheddar cheese
1 1/2 cups of Bisquick
The fun part:
- Pre-heat oven to 375°
- Combine all ingredients in a medium sized bowl and mix well.
- Scoop a tablespoon of the mixture and form into balls.
- Bake on a lightly sprayed baking sheet for 15 minutes. Enjoy!
